Sandpoint, Idaho
Sandpoint, in the northern tip of Idaho, is located on magnificent 43-mile-long Lake Pend Oreille (pronounced pond-o-ray) surrounded by the Selkirk and Cabinet mountains. The lake is a spectacular, glaciated body of water that is the fifth deepest lake (1,158 feet at its greatest depth) in the United States with 111 miles of largely unpopulated shoreline. Its pristine waters and attendant recreational opportunities draw visitors from all parts of the country. Take a boat cruise or kayak tour, rent a houseboat, fish, sail, ride a personal watercraft, windsurf, water ski, swim, or meander along a shoreline trail and simply gawk at the beauty.
Just minutes away is Schweitzer Mountain ski resort. With a dazzling view of Lake Pend Oreille, Schweitzer Mountain Resort lies high in the Selkirk Range where abundant snowfall buries the slopes in more than 300 inches annually. With 2,900 skiable acres, Schweitzer is larger than Sun Valley, Alta, Crested Butte and Snowbird. Alpine skiing, cross-country ski trails, cat skiing, snowmobiling and tubing are all available.
