Laveno, Italy
Lovely blue seas, stunning shoreside villas and charming old-fashioned villages, Lake Maggiore is the epitome of an Italian getaway, with everything handpicked to create the ideal lakeside escape. Lake Maggiore, named 'maggiore' because it is the largest of the lakes closest to the Alps, is an absolute sight in Spring, when the beautiful and colorful camelias, azaleas, lemons and magnolias are in full blossom.
Cerro di Laveno, located on the Lombardy side of the beautiful Lake Maggiore is home to around 10,000 inhabitants – as the tourism capital of the eastern side of the lake, there is plenty to do. The lake, the mountains, and the varied landscape make Laveno the perfect base for activities. There is everything from scuba diving and windsurfing to hiking and ziplining. There is also a very rich history to explore in the region, with centuries-old buildings keeping the heritage intact.
There are fun and exciting events that take place in Laveno, such as the Fiera Labiena, a street market with fantastic crafts and food products. There is also the Presepe Sommerso, a lovely underwater exhibition that opens from early December until the end of the Christmas season.
Lake Maggiore is widely renowned around the world for the vast range of culinary products it has to offer. With quality, fresh seafood right on the doorstep, you can expect some delicious fish. The region is also popular for its cheeses and wines, especially the local Ossolano d'Alpe, a tasty (yet mild) cheese from cow's milk. There are also specialty cured hams and salamis, including the mortadella of the Ossola. For those with a sweet tooth, try some of the region's specialty cakes and biscuits, such as the Margheritine of Stresa as well as the Fugascine of Mergozzo.
